Gaffney Dayton Daily News DESC GETS LAST COMMAND DAYTON NATIVE TAKES CHARGE AT STATION A Dayton native on Wednesday took command of the Defense Electronics SupplyCenter for its final days. Army Col. Jonathan W. House became DESC's 16th and final commander in a ceremony that included the retirement of its former commander, Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Larry T. Garrett. House, the first Army colonel and first Dayton native to command the supplycenter in Kettering, earned bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Dayton and received his Army commission through the university's Reserve Officer Training Corps program. House, who lives in Oakwood, came to DESC as deputy director in July 1994. ``He actually pursued the assignment. He wanted to come and help close DESCand then retire here with his family,'' DESC spokeswoman Libby VanHook said. Garrett's retirement marked the end of a 29-year career. Gen. Carl E. Munday Jr., commandant of the Marine Corps, and Air Force Maj. Gen. George Babbitt, head of the Defense Logistics Agency, which oversees DESC, took part in the ceremony. The 1993 Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted to consolidate DESC with a sister unit in Columbus and shut down its home, Gentile Air Force Station. DESC is scheduled to close out its Kettering operation in December 1996. Kettering has formed a reuse committee to find new uses for the 165-acre property and its 44 buildings. A military payroll center is moving into part of the complex.LENGTH: Short : 48 LINESSUBJ: U.S. MILITARY ORGANIZATIONS CHIEF EXECUTIVES DAYTONIAN NA: COL. JONATHAN W.
