The 36-year-old princess died at 4 a.m., Paris time, after a lunghemorrhage, doctors told a hospital news conference. Doctors worked at least two hours to revive her, according to broadcastreports. The crash happened shortly after midnight in a tunnel along the Seine Riverat the Pont de l'Alma bridge. It came as paparazzi - the commercialphotographers who constantly tail Diana - followed her car, police said. The death was announced at a 6 a.m. hospital news conference by Dr. AlainPavie, head of the cardiology department. ``The death of the Princess of Wales fills us all with shock and deepgrief,'' said British ambassador Michael Jay, who was at the hospital. Diana's death from cardiac arrest came after she suffered heavy internalbleeding in the early-morning accident. French radio said the paparazzi weretrailing Diana's car on motorcycles. Five photographers were arrested, itsaid. The high-speed pursuit ended in a crash in the tunnel that trapped severalpeople in a pileup. The force of the crash crumpled the roof of the Mercedesto door-high level. Fayed, the 42-year-old son of the billionaire Egyptian owner of London'sprestigious Harrod's department store, was also killed in the accident, alongwith the chauffeur. His father, Mohamed Al Fayed, was on his way to Paris, said his spokesman,Michael Cole. Before news of the death, a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman in London saidPrince Charles, now in Balmoral, Scotland, had been informed of the accident. ``We are aware of this awful accident but we are awaiting further detailsabout what has happened,'' the spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity. The spokesman said the accident was predictable because photographersrelentlessly pursued the princess wherever she went. ``The car was being chased by photographers on motorcycles, which couldhave caused the accident,'' a spokesman for the Prefecture of Police said. Police seized motorcycles and scooters after the accident, CNN reported. American tourists Tom Richardson and Joanna Luz were among the first on thescene. They told CNN they were walking nearby when they heard the crash and raninto the tunnel. The car Diana was in ``looked like it hit a wall,'' said Richardson, of SanDiego. ``There was smoke. I think the car hit a wall. A man started runningtowards us telling us to go.'' Miss Luz said: ``The horn was sounding for about two minutes. I think itwas the driver against the steering wheel.'' The police said the car was totally wrecked. The impact was so great, thecar's radiator was hurled onto the knees of the front-seat passenger. Theprincess was in the back seat. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was awakened with news of theaccident, said he was ``shocked and saddened'' by the ``devastating, appallingtragedy,'' a Downing Street spokesman said.
